INTRODUCTION
The Sunnyvale Eichler Project is a thoughtful restoration and reimagination of a classic mid-century modern home. Designed by Karina Marshall, this project pays homage to the original Eichler aesthetic while seamlessly integrating modern functionality and minimalism.
After a 1990s remodel stripped the home of its signature wood paneling and architectural character, the vision was clear: to restore the home’s soul, making it feel as though it had been untouched for decades while enhancing its livability for a modern lifestyle.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
Bringing the Eichler Back to Life
•Restoration of Eichler’s signature warm wood elements, including mahogany cabinetry, wall panels, and trim, to bring back the home’s mid-century charm.
•Thoughtful preservation of the original layout, keeping the kitchen and dining area separate, a decision made after the homeowners lived in the space and determined it suited their lifestyle.
•Strategic spatial reconfiguration of the primary suite, transforming an underutilized footprint into a luxurious dressing room, double vanity, double shower, and two-person air-jet tub
Kitchen & Dining Area
•Retention of the original kitchen-dining separation, widened entryways, and expanded glass atrium views, enhancing the home’s flow without removing defining architectural elements.
•Stunning yellow Heath Ceramics tile backsplash, a nod to the home’s mid-century roots, paired with custom mahogany cabinetry.
•Hidden luxury: Sleek custom mahogany handles and a concealed coffee bar with a beautifully finished interior, ensuring functionality without disrupting the minimalist aesthetic.
Primary Suite Transformation
•A masterclass in space optimization, where the original oversized bedroom and tiny ensuite were reimagined to accommodate:
•A dressing room with custom closets
•A double vanity and double shower
•A two-person air-jet bathtub
•Textured layers of Rombini tile, Terrazzio walls and floors, and Progetto plumbing fixtures, creating an intimate, spa-like retreat.
Hall Bath: Small Space, Big Impact
•Bold burnt-orange Japanese porcelain tile, perfectly complementing mahogany paneling for a seamless wraparound aesthetic.
•Custom color-matched fixtures, including a coated showerhead and metal trim details around the tile and glass.
•Despite its small footprint, the meticulous attention to detail makes this bathroom a standout feature of the home.
Interview with the Homeowners
Q: Why did you decide to remodel the home?
“We fell in love with the Eichler aesthetic, but the previous remodel had stripped away its character. Our goal was to bring back that mid-century warmth while creating a more functional, inviting space for our lifestyle.”
Q: Why did you choose to work with Karina Marshall?
“From the very first meeting, Karina understood our vision. She brought incredible creativity to the project, offering solutions that no other designer had considered—especially in reimagining our primary suite.”
Q: What is your favorite remodeled space in the house and why?
“The primary suite! We never imagined it could accommodate everything Karina designed—especially the dressing room, double shower, and bathtub—all within the original footprint.”
Q: What is an unexpected detail you love?
“The hidden coffee bar in the kitchen! It’s sleek, functional, and seamlessly blends into the cabinetry. It’s a daily luxury we never knew we needed.”
Q: How are you living in the home differently now?
“The kitchen now feels like the heart of the home, and the improved flow makes entertaining so much easier. We also find ourselves using the atrium more, as it now feels like an extension of our indoor space.”
Q: Any advice for Eichler owners about to embark on a renovation?
“Respect the original architecture! Instead of gutting it, find ways to enhance and modernize it while staying true to the Eichler design principles. And, if you can, work with a designer who truly understands mid-century modern homes.”
